Certified Adult ECMO Specialist (CES-A) Exam Review Course: Part II

This four-part review course is designed for non-perfusionists, perfusionists, and others who are registered to sit for the Adult Certified ECMO Specialist certification exam.

This material was originally presented live at the AmSECT 58th International Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, March 5, 2020.

The first video is a 20 minute consolidated review for the exam and includes keywords to guide your preparation for the exam. The learning module can be found by selecting the CES-A ECMO Module #2 File.

After completing the activities for this course, you will be able to:

1. Understand patient and pressure monitoring during ECMO support.

2. Describe the physiology between VA and VV ECMO support.

3. Apply basic principles for troubleshooting the interface between the ECC circuit and the patient.

4. Discuss successful strategies for achieving safe anticoagulation for ECMO support.

5. Understand oxygen content, O2 delivery, consumption, and shunting.

6. Identify laboratory assays used to monitor anticoagulation and hemostasis for ECMO support.


Expected time to complete this class: 100 minutes.


Per the ABCP, a maximum of ten (10) SDCE I CEU’s may be used for professional activity recertification within a three-year reporting cycle. Members may submit additional Category III CEU’s.
